The Community Yoga, Inc., formerly known as “FREE College Park Community YOGA,” was founded on the belief that collective wellness creates a collective Community. The strength of a Community should be based on the wellness of its residents. We believe the principals of yoga, which are Spiritual, Mind and Body, facilitate the wellness of the Human Body.
The Community Yoga, Inc. started its first class on September 23, 2017, with an attendance of 16 College Park residents. The second class was held on September 30, 2017, with 26 College Park Residents in attendance. We have now also added a second class for individuals with limited range of motion and health restrictions, since we recognize a need for specialized accommodations.
So far we have two classes offered on Saturdays, Beginners Yoga Class from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M., and Gentle Yoga Class from 9:45 to 10:45 A.M. Our certified instructors (rotating) are committed to assisting us in teaching both classes. Currently, we have over 45 College Park residents committed to attending the classes and are in need of more instructors.
The classes are free and open to College Park Residents. Join us at our permanent space, the Old Parish House at 4711 Knox Road, College Park, MD 20740.
TCY provides attending community participants with free yoga and a sanctuary to unwind each week. Community members can interact with each other, build connections and build their social capital. To reach further visibility, the organization has recently begun to seek community partnerships to further provide community benefit to the city of College Park. Our first of such events was the “Yoga for All” project that took place on August 18th, 2018 at Bear Square in College Park, Maryland, in partnership with the Riverdale Park Station and Whole Foods Market. For this event, a total of twenty new participants were in attendance. In addition, our team distributed outreach material to further inform the community of the services provided by TCY. Overall, the event was successful in bringing a diverse group of individuals together to practice yoga -- making TCY more visible within the community.
Also, in our continuous effort to bringing the College Park Community together, TCY in 2018 developed and started a new program, "TCY on the Go". The purpose of this program is to target seniors whom cannot come to our location in College Park, Maryland. Currently, this program is offered to the residents at the Spellman House Apartments in College Park. Often in our society seniors are placed in the shadows and forgotten about. "TCY on the Go" intends to integrate them into the community, which is in line with our mission, "To strengthen and unify our community through yoga".
